# Rules

> Rules configured by users on this product's devices.

The **Rules** tab (Monitor → Rule Engine Monitor) shows the automation rules your
**users** have configured on their devices for this product. It's a monitoring
view — you see how people are automating your product in the field.

## What a rule is

A rule is user-defined automation: **when** a condition is met (a threshold, a
state, a schedule), **do** an action (send a command, trigger an SMS, etc.). Users
build these on their own devices; this tab lets you, the manufacturer, observe
them across the product.

  Users manage their own rules from their dashboard (the **Rule Manager** widget).
  This Studio tab is the manufacturer's monitoring view of those rules.
